No Refined Sugar Challenge

Today kicks off my No Refined Sugar Challenge, but I’m not doing it alone!  I’ve got a friend *cue James Taylor* that is going to forge ahead with me into the world of no refined sugars.  It’s going to be tough, so it’s time to put on those boxing gloves and start fighting those sugar cravings.

It’s going to be harder than just giving up what I commonly think of that contains sugar: sweet tea, sodas, donuts, cookies etc. When I cut out all soy (for medication reasons) 6 months ago, I discovered there is soy in almost all processed foods.  Ya’ll even my garlic salt has soy in it and most salad dressings. I learned quickly that vegetable oil = soybean oil.  Never knew this before. The same detective work is going to apply to cutting sugar I’m afraid.

Harvard School of Public Health has a nice list of common names given to sugar on product labels.

  • Agave nectar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cane crystals
  • Cane sugar
  • Corn sweetener
  • Corn syrup
  • Crystalline fructose
  • Dextrose
  • Evaporated cane juice
  • Fructose
  • Fruit juice concentrates
  • Glucose
  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Honey
  • Invert sugar
  • Lactose
  • Maltose
  • Malt syrup
  • Molasses
  • Raw sugar
  • Sucrose
  • Sugar
  • Syrup

Also, one of Dr. Oz’s tips is to look for anything that says “ose”.

So anyone else want to be a cut sugar buddy? Strength in numbers!
