Raw Shea Butter

I actually went on the hunt for pure tea tree oil today (not successful) and ended up in a shop talking to the ladies about skin care and the dreadful dry itchy skin.  I am working on calming my skin from the inside out, but this will take time and I need relief today.  Any who, I’ve always used products with cocoa butter or shea butter as an ingredient, but I have never used either raw and unprocessed.   Commercial processed lotions and butters have never been my friend and never really helped. Coconut oil would be a good choice for whole body moisturizer, but it’s greasy and tends to get on my clothing.

So, I bought a small container of raw shea butter.  Admittedly, it’s not extremely attractive.  It’s a light creamy color and it has a hard consistency.  The smell is somewhat nutty, but not extremely strong.  Testing has begun.  When I got home, I dug into the butter and put it on just my arms.  It’s a bit of a pain in the butt to get out, but if it works it will be worth it.

So far it’s been about 4 hours and my arms have not itched and they still seem moisturized.   I don’t feel sticky or tacky and it did not leave my skin feeling greasy.  Might have found a winner!  Going to test my legs and tummy tomorrow.  Fingers crossed!

  1. If coconut oil is greasy you are applying too much at a time. I keep a little container (old child proof medicine bottle) in the car, on the nighttable, beside my sinks. I love the way it feels on my face and extremeties. Hope the shea butter continues to work, if not give the coconut oil another shot. A small amount often seems to work well for me. Found an old book The Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife in a second hand bookstore and have really enjoyed it. Recipes for eating coconut oil also and info about how twh soy people had given out wrong info concerning the oil in the mid 80’s.
Thinking of you. I have knee replacement surgery scheduled for Monday.

  2. Thanks Emily, coconut oil has been working great on my face and in my hair. I’ll give the coconut oil another shot on my body. I might have been putting too much on. I am going to see if I can find that book online and read it. Sounds great! I don’t do soy so would be a good book for me. Prayers for you on your surgery Monday. Let me know how it goes or if you need anything. Love you
